What we have to say about your health and well being

Weight Loss Overview

Weight loss refers to the reduction of body weight, typically through a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. It is often pursued for health reasons, such as reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, as well as improving overall well-being and quality of life. Effective weight loss strategies focus on creating a calorie deficit, where the number of calories consumed is less than the calories expended. This can be achieved through diet changes and regular exercise. Sustainable weight loss involves making gradual and lasting changes to eating and exercise habits, as well as addressing emotional and behavioural factors that contribute to overeating or sedentary lifestyles.

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) Injectable

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) Injectable is a prescription medication designed to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and aid in weight loss. Mounjaro is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by enhancing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon levels, slowing digestion, and regulating appetite. This combination helps improve blood sugar control and promotes weight loss when paired with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Key Features

  • Dual-action for diabetes management: Targets two critical pathways (GIP and GLP-1) to improve blood sugar control.
  • Supports weight loss: Helps reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, making it easier to manage food intake.
  • Once-weekly injection: Convenient dosing helps maintain consistent management of blood sugar and weight.
  • Clinically proven: Demonstrated significant blood sugar and weight reductions in clinical trials, especially when combined with lifestyle changes.

Indications

Mounjaro is intended for adults with type 2 diabetes and may be prescribed off-label for weight loss in people with obesity.

Warnings

Do not use if you:

  • Are allergic to tirzepatide or any of the ingredients in Mounjaro.
  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Consult a doctor before use if you:

  • Have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, or kidney disease.
  • Are taking other medications to manage blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, as combining these with Mounjaro can increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
  • Have gastrointestinal issues, as Mounjaro may cause digestive side effects.

Discontinue use and seek medical attention if:

  • You experience severe stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting (possible signs of pancreatitis).
  • You notice swelling in your neck or throat or experience difficulty swallowing (potential signs of thyroid issues).
  • You develop gallbladder symptoms like pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or jaundice.

Not suitable for use in children: Mounjaro has not been studied in people under 18 years of age and is not approved for pediatric use.

Keep out of reach of children: This is a prescription medication and should only be used by individuals for whom it is prescribed.

Dosage

Mounjaro is administered as a once-weekly injection, with the starting dose typically at 2.5 mg. Your healthcare provider may gradually increase the dosage depending on your response to the medication and your treatment plan.

Administration

Inject Mounjaro under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites to prevent irritation. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for proper injection technique.

Take with or without food

Mounjaro can be injected at any time of day, with or without meals. Ensure that you maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine for the best results.

Do not exceed the prescribed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible unless your next dose is due in less than 48 hours. Never double up on doses.

Store properly

Store Mounjaro in the refrigerator until use. Once taken out of the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature for a short time, as advised by your healthcare provider.

Active Ingredient

Tirzepatide (varied dosages starting at 2.5 mg): A dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps manage blood sugar and supports weight loss.

Inactive Ingredients

  • Disodium phosphate dihydrate
  • Sodium chloride
  • Water for injections
  • Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment)

These ingredients ensure the stability and proper delivery of the active compound.

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea: A common reaction, especially in the early stages of treatment.
  • Diarrhea or constipation: Digestive upset is frequently reported but may improve over time.
  • Vomiting: Can occur, particularly as the body adjusts to the medication.

Less Common but Serious Side Effects

  • Pancreatitis: Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • Gallbladder problems: Pain in the upper right abdomen or jaundice could indicate gallstones or other gallbladder issues.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): Particularly if Mounjaro is used with other diabetes medications like insulin.

Rare Side Effects

  • Thyroid tumors: Report any neck swelling, difficulty swallowing, or hoarseness to your doctor.
  • Kidney problems: Signs include reduced urine output and swelling in the hands and feet.
  • Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, or swelling of the face or throat may indicate an allergic response.

Maintenance plan:

Once you achieve your weight loss goal with Mounjaro (tirzepatide), the maintenance plan will depend on several factors, including your overall health, weight stability, and your healthcare provider’s recommendations. Here’s what a typical maintenance approach might look like:

✅ 1. Continued Use at a Lower Dose

  • Many people remain on Mounjaro at a lower dose for long-term weight maintenance, as stopping the medication completely may lead to weight regain.
  • Common maintenance doses are 2.5 mg or 5 mg weekly, which are lower than the higher doses used during the weight loss phase.

Lower doses may help maintain weight loss while reducing side effects.

 2. Gradual Tapering or Stopping

  • Some providers may recommend gradually tapering off the medication to see if you can maintain your weight with lifestyle modifications alone.
  • This typically involves slowly reducing the dose rather than stopping abruptly.

However, studies indicate that many people experience partial or full weight regain after discontinuing Mounjaro.

 3. Lifestyle and Behavior Modifications

Whether you continue Mounjaro or not, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key:

  • Diet: Stick to a balanced, calorie-controlled diet with plenty of protein and fiber.
  • Exercise: Aim for at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
  • Behavioral support: Consider ongoing counseling or support groups to sustain habits.

 4. Regular Monitoring

  • Frequent follow-ups with your healthcare provider will help track your weight, blood sugar, and overall health.
  • Blood work may be necessary to monitor for potential side effects, especially if you have type 2 diabetes or other metabolic conditions.

 Key Considerations

  • Long-term use: Mounjaro, like other GLP-1 receptor agonists, may be prescribed long-term for chronic weight management, especially for those with obesity or metabolic conditions.
  • Risk of regain: Research shows that discontinuing medications like Mounjaro or Wegovy can lead to significant weight regain, so staying on a maintenance dose might be preferable for some individuals.
