What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural stage of life.
Menopause marks the end of menstrual periods and happens because the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Every woman’s experience is different, and symptoms can vary from mild to life-changing.
Menopause usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier because of genetics, medical treatment, surgery, autoimmune conditions or primary ovarian insufficiency.
Understanding the stages
Perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.
Perimenopause
The transition leading up to menopause. Hormone levels can fluctuate and symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, poor sleep, anxiety or brain fog may begin.
Menopause
Menopause is usually confirmed when you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months, without another medical or physiological reason.
Post-menopause
The stage after menopause. Symptoms may continue, and longer-term health areas such as bone, heart and metabolic health may need support.
Symptoms
Menopause can affect body and mind.
Symptoms are different for every woman. Your consultation gives you time to discuss what you are experiencing and what support may be suitable.

Treatment options
What is hormone replacement therapy?
During perimenopause and menopause, hormone levels can fluctuate and fall. Hormone replacement therapy, often called HRT, can help restore hormonal balance and may improve symptoms for many women.
HRT is not suitable for everyone. During your consultation, the pharmacist will discuss your health history, symptoms, risks and treatment preferences so you can make an informed decision.
Body-wide treatment
Patches, gels, tablets or other options may be discussed where clinically appropriate.
Localised treatment
Vaginal oestrogen may help symptoms such as dryness, soreness, painful sex or recurring urinary symptoms.
Long-term health
Menopause can affect bone, heart and metabolic health. Your pharmacist can explain risks and suitable next steps.
